James Coleman
My WorkI teach sixth grade, integrated co-teaching (ICT) reading, English, social studies and math, on Long Island. We have built a classroom that builds proficient readers who ultimately find a love for the printed word, and math students who can find success, often after years of failure. Students encouraged me to pursue graduate work at the University of Connecticut. They sent me to Haiti to build a school following the earthquake in 2010. And when mandates for standardized testing and measurement crushed our spirits in the classroom, they sent me out fighting. I completed my PhD in Literacy Studies at Hofstra with a study of a child, and how her language and literacy experiences in school were linked and limited by how she was seen.
